NABWIC Celebrates Black Business Month

NABWIC Celebrates Closing the Black Business Wealth Gap

“I had to make my own living and my own opportunity. But I made it. Don’t sit down and wait for the opportunity to come, get up and make them.
- Madam C.J. Walker

The focus of this month’s NABWIC news is on celebrating Black businesses in our organization as the nation celebrates Black Business nationally. Organizations like the logos cited in this edition. Our focus is also on our trip to the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington #ALC51, #CBCF, you can register to join us at nabwic.org as we continue to celebrate the accomplishments of Black Businesses.

In the construction industry we do not have the luxury to sit, stand, or wait for an opportunity. As we celebrate black business month every month we support closing the black business wealth gap by supporting lack businesses.

In August 2004 Black business month was idealized by John William Templeton and Frederick E. Jordan to drive the political agenda affecting 2.6 million Black businesses.

The more inclusive we are, the more generational wealth we can build in our own communities which will compound and grow. As we remember African Americans slaves were not allowed to build wealth, grow or own anything. Therefore, as African Americans we are celebrating the rebuilding of our heritage as small Black business owners to reconnect our families and our communities by challenging the world to refocus and revisit black owned businesses of all kinds, especially in construction.

Our call to action is for you to consider ways to help. For example, take the 15% percent pledge to support business equity in your community and support the Buy Black Movement according to BlackEnterprise.com. Support and encourage African American Businesses in our community. It is still about the business of making a profit for all businesses. This is not a give away or a handout.

When it comes to opportunity for Black Businesses, James Brown said it best, “Open the door, and I will get it myself.” Your call to action is to consider ways to help support Black businesses.
