MCO Construction and Services, Inc. Secures Bid for Riviera Beach Fire Station 86, 87 and 88

We are excited to announce that MCO Construction and Services, Inc., in collaboration with Kaufman Lynn Construction and other local firms, has successfully won the bid for several fire stations in Riviera Beach. The project, valued at $18,973,701, marks another significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to the Riviera Beach community.

Ann McNeill, our NABWIC founder and CEO of MCO Construction and Services, Inc., expressed her deep gratitude to the City of Riviera Beach Council for entrusting the team with this pivotal project. "I am so humbled and honored to be part of the team that has won the contract to build Firestation 86. This project is not just about constructing a building but about building lives, families, and communities," Ann remarked.

This project continues the legacy of MCO Construction and its commitment to enhancing community infrastructure, following the successful completion of Fire stations 87 and the award-winning Fire Station 88. The involvement of local and minority-owned businesses has been a key focus, with participation growing from 37% in previous projects to over 50% in recent endeavors.

Ann McNeill, a Riviera Beach native and the first Black female contractor in the State of Florida to engage at this level, emphasizes the importance of these projects for local businesses, especially Black-owned enterprises, which may not typically have the opportunity to work on flagship public projects. "The greatest thing is to drive by and say: I painted that," shared Amon Yisrael from Amon Professional Services, reflecting the profound personal and professional pride that comes with contributing to such meaningful projects.

As we celebrate this new achievement, we look forward to the impact that Fire station 86 will have on the Riviera Beach area—proving that great teamwork indeed makes the dream work. We are committed to continuing our efforts to help build and uplift our community through each project we undertake.

On the evening of March 27, 2024, the Philadelphia professional community gathered for an enriching Business-to-Business Networking event at The Enterprise Center located at 4548 Market Street. The event, which ran from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, offered a dynamic platform for professionals in construction and related services to connect, share insights, and explore opportunities for collaboration.

This memorable networking occasion was the result of a partnership among four prominent local organizations dedicated to fostering diversity and growth in the business community. The National Association of Black Women in Construction (NABWIC Philadelphia Area), the Eastern Minority Supplier Development Council (EMSDC), The Enterprise Center’s Construction Consortium (TEC), and the Small Business Development Center at Temple University collaborated to make the evening a reality.

Participants enjoyed an array of small bites while engaging in meaningful conversations with fellow professionals, setting the stage for future projects and partnerships. The event underscored the importance of building a strong, interconnected business community in Philadelphia, especially within the construction sector and professional services.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting the value of such gatherings in promoting diversity, inclusion, and mutual growth. The success of the event has paved the way for future collaborations among the hosting organizations, all of which are committed to supporting the development of diverse businesses in the region.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated, making the evening not just a networking event, but a vibrant community-building experience. Stay tuned for future gatherings that will continue to strengthen our professional networks and foster development within our industries.

This special event, enhanced by the presence of NABWIC founder, Miss Ann McNeil, brought our esteemed members into the limelight in front of hundreds of council members at the Capitol.
The day began with an informative guided tour led by a knowledgeable Capitol intern, offering our members a unique glimpse into the heart of our state's legislative processes. The tour was followed by a delightful lunch sponsored by Marta, allowing for moments of camaraderie and reflection among the members.
The highlight of the visit came when Representative Glaize, in a gesture of profound appreciation and recognition, presented a plaque to Ann McNeil. This act not only commemorated McNeil's outstanding achievements and contributions but also underscored the impactful presence and influence of NABWIC in the community.
This memorable visit to the Capitol was the fruit of an encounter between the NABWIC Atlanta Chapter President, Monique Strong, and Representative Glaize during the 2nd Annual Union City MLK Day of Service on January 15, 2024. Glaize, intrigued by the sea of NABWIC red shirts among the day's participants, reached out, leading to this honored invitation. This sequence of events serves as a powerful reminder that engagement in community service, dedication, and visibility in critical moments are indeed recognized and valued.
The day's proceedings not only provided a platform for our members to be celebrated but also reinforced the message that the efforts of those committed to service and excellence in the construction industry and beyond do not go unnoticed. As we reflect on this significant occasion, we are reminded of the strength and impact of our collective presence and the importance of continuing our work with zeal and visibility.
Alice H. Parker would have been the best contact to have as a design/build subcontractor today. She was an African-American inventor known for her patent for a gas furnace that used natural gas to power a heating furnace which was a revolutionary idea that conserved energy and paved the way for the central heating systems we all have in our homes today¹². She was born in 1895 and died in 1920¹.

In 2019, the National Society of Black Physicists honored Parker as an "African American inventor famous for her patented system of central heating using natural gas." It called her invention a "revolutionary idea" for the 1920s, "that conserved energy and paved the way for the central heating systems"¹.

“We have a very diverse environment and a very inclusive culture and those characteristics got us through the tough times. Diversity generated a better strategy, better risk management, better debates, and better outcomes.”

- Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas

Embracing diversity in the construction industry is not only a matter of social justice but also a pathway to success. We, the members of NABWIC, support the statement of Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas who stated that, “diversity generated a better strategy and ultimately, better outcomes”. Every day, we are afforded the opportunity to witness the positive results generated by the diverse and inclusive strategies we execute. By facing and overcoming the challenges associated with diversity, we can tap into a wealth of overlooked proficiency, foster innovation, and create a more inclusive and vibrant construction sector.

On Thursday, March 9, 2023, I had the pleasure of being one of 5 panelists at New York Build. The topic of discussion for the panel was Breaking Down Barriers – Diversity in Construction. I would like to thank Ms. Lilian Ho and the New York Build committee, for the invitation and the opportunity to share details on behalf of NABWIC regarding the importance, influence and impact of diversity and inclusion in construction.

New York Build works with a large team of champions, driving change, diversity and inclusion in the construction industry. This annual networking event is free to attend and offers the chance to network, learn from diversity champions, discuss key issues and feel inspired.

The broad and diverse panel of civic leaders and industry experts worked for six months to generate recommendations for the city and state – at a time of historic alignment between the two – to partner with each other and across sectors to reimagine a "new" New York that propelled the city and the region forward for its next chapter of equitable, inclusive growth.

This panel exemplified the necessity of our presence and our contribution to the diverse environment. We not only represented successful Black women in construction and related businesses, but we also demonstrated our presence as women. We showcased our existence, embodied our purposes and intentions, established strong connections within our communities, and actively contributed to both the history of America and the history of Black women in construction in America.

To address diversity in construction, it is essential to start by promoting a culture of inclusivity. This begins with recognizing and valuing the unique perspectives, experiences, and contributions of individuals from different backgrounds. Encouraging open dialogue and active listening can help bridge gaps and foster understanding among team members.

Let us embrace the rich tapestry of backgrounds, experiences, and talents that diversity brings, and together, build a stronger, more vibrant construction industry for the future. Deirdre Harvey, Project CEO of MTA once said, “Great networking and educational opportunities were available. A very positive vibe was felt throughout the convention space. Executives with various perspectives were available for discourse.”

.
