CHAIR'S MESSAGE: NABWIC Plans an Exciting Year Ahead!

Posted By Jacqulyn Perry, Friday, February 3, 2023
“The man who has a Definite Major Purpose in life and a Definite Plan for achieving that purpose has already gone nine-tenths of the distance towards success. ” – Napoleon Hill.

In the spirit of growing leadership, I'm reminded of an interview I listened to with John Maxwell, a renowned leadership expert, on the Impact Theory by Tom Bilyeu podcast. He said that sometimes leaders have to leave in order for leaders to lead. That resonated with me as I was torn between attending the NABWIC 2023 Annual Meeting and going on a three-week vacation to Asia. In my absence our NABWIC leaders led in an awesome way.

As a part of our plans for an exciting new year, it was an honor to attend the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Dorval R. Carter, Jr, President of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and Leslie Richards, General Manager of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) on Monday January 16, 2023.

As we start the celebration of Black History Month, we are reminded that we are making American History as Black women in the construction industry. Bravely and boldly speaking, as the voice of Black Women in construction, we are arriving at a place of acknowledgment and recognition as the Sojourner Truths, the Harriett Tubmans, and the Madam C J Walkers of the future.

Our most recent NABWIC Annual Meeting, hosted by our Orlando area leadership, Laini Schultz, was exhilarating. We hosted over 100 registrants during the week’s events, including honoring our volunteer of the year, Elena Hercule. We were pleased to host the NABWIC Reception on Wednesday, January 18th, 2023, with Mayor Jerry Demings from Orange County. Our 2023 Annual Strategic Planning and Reporting meeting, and the NABWIC Investment club meeting was held on Thursday, January 19th, 2023. We hosted our Board Meeting, Billion Dollars Luncheon in Transportation, and the Think and Grow Rich Meeting on Friday, January 20th, 2023.

Thank you to our sponsors. This would not have been possible without you: Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX), Turner Construction, Weitz, PCI, HMS Host, Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA), Hensel Phelps, SRR International, Miller Electric Company, Middlesex, MLM-Martin Architects, Inc, PA Wallace & Associates Inc., and Verizon.

Thank you to our presenters for the Billion Dollar Luncheon in Transportation: Secretary Dr. Shawn Wilson, Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development; and Secretary Omer Osman, Illinois Department of Transportation.

This event exemplified the necessity of our presence. Our presence, not only as successful Black women in construction and other related businesses but as women, exhibiting our existence, manifesting our purposes and intentions, making powerful connections within our communities - at large, while progressively contributing to the history of America and the history of Black women in construction in America. As we go forward, bravely and boldly creating history, be reminded of this message from the remarkable Ralph Waldo Emerson, “It may be safely trusted as proportionate and of good issues, so it be faithfully imparted, but God will not have his work made manifest by cowards.” – Ralph W. Emerson.

It was very exciting to be a part of history in the making during the special ceremony commemorating the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Dorval R. Carter, Jr.., President of the (CTA),Chicago Transit Authority and Leslie Richards, General Manager of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) The event will took place on
Monday, January 16, 2023, at 11:00 AM EDT at the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) office on 555 12th Street NW, Suite 1000, Washington, D.C. 20004, AASHTO Office.
