Banfield I am reminded of Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream” speech delivered on the 28 th of August, 1963. It best describes why NABWIC goes to Washington, D.C. for the Congressional Black Caucus. King said, “One hundred years later, life and business of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself in exile on his own land. And so, we’ve come here today to dramatize a shameful condition. In a sense we’ve come to our nation’s capital to cash a check.” This is why NABWIC goes to Washington to the Congressional Black Caucus every year. NO MORE TRAUMA IN THIS HOUSE By Karen Peters, MS | Northeast Florida Area karenpetersco@gmail.com It would be considered desecrating and disrespectful for Jews, for example, to live in a home located in Auschwitz and owned by the descendants of Nazis, let alone pay for it. For African Americans, we live, work, play, learn, shop, and even worship in and around the spaces that hold the spiritual imprint of our ancestors' trauma. It has become the norm. In fact, we often struggle, strain, and stress to enter into mortgages [mortgage means "death pledge"] with companies that amassed their wealth and power through enslavement, to pay for said properties. To add further insult to injury, less than 50% of African Americans own our homes, and the remaining non-homeowners spend more than a third of our monthly income on rent. Change, however, is on the horizon.
