“The most disrespected person in America is the Black Woman. The most unprotected person in America is the Black Woman. The most neglected person in America is the Black Woman.”
- Malcom X
"As I listened to Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown-Jackson's interrogation during the Senate hearings last week and watched her smile in spite of the offensiveness of the situation, Malcolm X’s words echoed in my heart."
As we conclude the celebration of Black History and Women’s History months, what do they both have in common? The Black Woman making HER STORY in our history.
Every month we continue to celebrate and raise awareness about the challenges, struggles, and accomplishments of Black Women in the Construction industry, but for some, it’s never enough.
While attending many national events I am continually reminded of the words of Malcolm X from one of his speeches in Los Angeles on May 22, 1962. At this point in my career, these words encourage, inspire, and motivate me to move forward in our history-making history in construction.
As I listened to the Black women who move the nation at COMTO’s Women Who Move the Nation Breakfast on March 16th, I heard Malcolm X’s words echoed in their speeches and comments, and I felt an urgency to be a bolder, louder voice for Black Women in Construction.
As I listened to Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown-Jackson's interrogation during the Senate hearings last week and watched her smile in spite of the offensiveness of the situation, Malcolm X’s words echoed in my heart.
Who will demand respect for the Black Woman? Who will protect the Black Woman? Who will address the Black Woman’s disparity? Who will be the voice of the Black Woman in Construction? The answer is, “Here I am, Lord. Send me.”
