NABWIC Plans an Exciting Year Ahead! “The man who has a Definite Major Purpose in life and a Definite Plan for achieving that purpose has already gone nine-tenths of the distance towards success. ” – Napoleon Hill.   In the spirit of growing leadership, I am reminded of an interview I listened to with John Maxwell, a renowned leadership expert, on the Impact Theory by Tom Bilyeu podcast. He said that sometimes leaders have to leave in order for leaders to lead. That resonated with me as I was torn between attending the NABWIC 2023 Annual Meeting and going on a three-week vacation to Asia. In my absence, our NABWIC leaders led in an awesome way.   As a part of our plans for an exciting new year, it was an honor to attend the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Dorval R. The Year in Review! "2022 was a year full of excitement, challenges, triumphs, and failures."   I bring greetings on behalf of the National Association of Black Women in Construction's Board of Directors.   Overall, 2022 was victorious. As I reviewed my excessive notes from a wide array of NABWIC engagements throughout the course of the year, I am encouraged.

Whether it was facilitating sessions to support our members, volunteers, and/or leaders in their ability to navigate our platforms and templates; or coordinating our engagement with USDOT Secretary Buttigieg; it is all forward movement. While many of the fresh ideas I was ever so passionate to champion at the beginning of my term seemed to be beyond our reach, so much growth came from being stretched and pulled into uncharted territory.   Read More

"Tough Times Never Last, but Tough People Do" --Robert H. Shuller   As we look back in a time of reflection, we can look forward and see that this was one of those years where there were tough times for many and exciting times for others. As we wrap up what has been an immensely difficult year for many around the world in construction, we are happy to bring it to a close.   We want to wish our construction community a Happy New Year and thank you for your year-round support and dedication for the past and the upcoming year.   During this upcoming year, our focus is adding membership value to opportunities created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Justice 40 initiatives. Next year is promising to be the best year ever for our association and partners.   Along with all the new promises that this New Year will bring we continue to pray for love, peace, and prosperity of mind, body, and spirit for you and your family while remembering tough times never last in construction, but tough people do.   As we look back on yesterday, we are reminded that Ecclesiastes 3;15, states the God requires an account of what is past; therefore, our Nabwic Annual Meeting is being held on January 18-20, 2023, in Orlando Florida, this is our call to action, so join us as we celebrate the New Year and give an account of the past year, details at nabwic.org.

NABWIC SUPPORTS MINORITY ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT WEEK (MED WEEK)

In December 1982, President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation stating that the first full week of October was designated as national “Minority Enterprise Development Week” (MED Week) to recognize the tremendous contributions that minority business owners have made toward the continued economic development of our Nation. This national event was celebrated locally by South Florida Chapter and the Jacksonville Area.

Woman in Spotlight, Laura Kelley, Executive Director, CFX, to be recognized during Transportation Luncheon     Laura Kelley has more than 30 years of experience in executive transportation management, helping shape national, state and local policy. In 2014, she was named the Central Florida Expressway Authority’s (CFX) first executive director, managing the daily operations of the agency’s 125-mile expressway system and $4 billion-dollar five-year work plan.   Under her leadership, the agency has adopted a “Customer First” philosophy leading to innovative programs such as the expansion of customer services by opening drive-up Reload Lanes on expressways, piloting the Visitor Toll Pass Program in partnership with the Orlando International Airport, and saving commuters millions of dollars through toll discounts.n Institute, the governing board for TeamFL, and the executive advisory board for Advancing Sustainability through Powered Infrastructure for Roadway Electrification (ASPIRE). She is a graduate of Florida State University’s College of Business.

Please remember to engage with our committees nationally and locally. A special announcement and acknowledgment to our NABWIC Member of the Year, Dominique McNeil who was selected by the national membership. EVENT RECAP P3 BILLION DOLLAR LUNCHEON IN PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP CONTRACTING OPPORTUNITIES

Woman in Spotlight, Kassandra Timothe, recognized during P3 Luncheon   The National Association of Black Women in Construction (NABWIC) Billion Dollar Virtual Luncheon In Private, Public, Partnership Contracting Opportunities was held on Wednesday, Oct. 5.  The vision of NABWIC is to build lasting strategic partnerships with first-rate organizations and individuals committed to providing ground-breaking and innovative solutions for Black women in construction and their respective communities. The luncheon allowed members to connect with more than a billion dollars in contracting opportunities across the country.      During the luncheon, NABWIC presented the Woman in the Spotlight Award to Kassandra Timothe, Councilwoman of North Miami District 2.

Industry leaders nationwide shared upcoming opportunities to work with their organizations. The keynote speakers were leaders in the industry, including Judith Thorman, Miami Dade County Schools District 1 School Board Member/Vice Chair; K. Joe Carpenter, Jr. P.E., Division Director of Engineering at Georgia Department of Transportation; and Hasan Ikhrata, CEO of San Diego Association of Governments.    Recap by Allison Horton South Florida Chapter

NABWIC Members Laini Schultz (Ralisan LLC) and Xiomara Yanique (CMTS LLC) are involved in Hurricane Ian Clean-Up Activities in Central Florida.   Shaniece Bennett Accutrak became an FPC client in response to a call to action from NABWIC's Consortium Sub-Committee. Due to this collaboration, Accutrak was contacted by the DOT contracting office to ask if we would consider executing an award for the current fiscal year rather than waiting until 2023. Accutrak is grateful to be awarded two (2) prime contracts from US DOT in September 2022.

Powerful Parties with a Purpose and a Plan “Long-term perspective turns out to be more important than family background, education, race, intelligence, conversations, or virtually any other single factor in determining your success in life and work.” – Dr. Edward C. Banfield I am reminded of Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream” speech delivered on the 28 th of August, 1963. It best describes why NABWIC goes to Washington, D.C. for the Congressional Black Caucus. King said, “One hundred years later, life and business of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself in exile on his own land. And so, we’ve come here today to dramatize a shameful condition. In a sense we’ve come to our nation’s capital to cash a check.” This is why NABWIC goes to Washington to the Congressional Black Caucus every year. NO MORE TRAUMA IN THIS HOUSE By Karen Peters, MS | Northeast Florida Area karenpetersco@gmail.com It would be considered desecrating and disrespectful for Jews, for example, to live in a home located in Auschwitz and owned by the descendants of Nazis, let alone pay for it. For African Americans, we live, work, play, learn, shop, and even worship in and around the spaces that hold the spiritual imprint of our ancestors' trauma. It has become the norm. In fact, we often struggle, strain, and stress to enter into mortgages [mortgage means "death pledge"] with companies that amassed their wealth and power through enslavement, to pay for said properties. To add further insult to injury, less than 50% of African Americans own our homes, and the remaining non-homeowners spend more than a third of our monthly income on rent. Change, however, is on the horizon.

CELEBRATING BLACK BUSINESS MONTH

Black Business Month is celebrated in August — it’s a time to acknowledge and appreciate black-owned businesses across the nation and all that they represent in the country’s continual striving for diversity and equality.

In celebration of Black Business Month, the Northeast Area of NABWIC held its Hard Hat and Heels Event at black-owned female restauranteur, Thea Jeffers, owner of Breezy Jazz House. Over 50 guests and members attended the event sponsored by Truist Bank, NABWIC's Bronze Corporate Member.    Businesses had the opportunity to take advantage of Truist products and services and to learn about opportunities at Jaxport. NABWIC Central Florida at PACE Center for Girls   NABWIC Central Florida members Laini Schultz and Barbara Moore live out the NABWIC mission by showing their support for PACE Center for Girls.   The Central Florida Area looks forward to future collaborations with Pace, not only in the Florida Area, but also in locations where NABWIC & Pace are located nationwide. Valerie Mundy, CEO New City Infrastracture NABWIC Member, South Florida Legislative Committee  NABWIC consistently reinforces and emphasizes the importance of certifications with local, state and federal agencies. Because of NABWIC, I have been careful to acquire and maintain my DBE certifications.   As a result, my company, New City Infrastructure (NCI), was contacted and hired as the engineering consultant for Tampa Int'l Airport. NCI will be providing the design for the replacement of the 16 mile perimeter security fence's access control and card reader system along with security cameras. The project started in July 2022 and documents will be available for bidding February 2023.   Rhonda Grayer,MSA, CEO WT Stevens NABWIC Member, Detroit Finance Committee Through numerous events and training, both local and nationally, NABWIC provided an opportunity for me to meet a prime contractor that I networked with for 3 years. Eventually, they became interested in not only partnering, but also mentoring my firm WT Stevens Construction, Inc.   Thanks to the tireless work of our chair and our current and past president for assisting WT Stevens Construction in building the relationships that would be necessary to pull this off.   We have now secured two, multi-million dollar contracts to remediate water service lines in the State of Michigan. I am grateful to be a part of this awesome team!

Capability Statements should be clear, colorful, detailed, and include a company overview, certifications, NAICS codes, technical skills and contact information.   Continued professional training, mentoring and access to opportunities are available to NABWIC members through the MBDA/NABWIC program partnership.
